Ortofon history line

1918

9th October: the Electrical Phono Film Company is founded by Axel Petersen (1887-1971) and Arnold Poulsen (1889-1952) with the objective of developing one of the world’s first synchronized sound film systems.

1938-44

During this period microphones, dynamic compressors, oscillographs, optical instruments and similar equipment & accessories are developed by Ortofon.

1946

The first mono cutterhead for the gramophone industry is developed, succeeded by development of the world’s first Moving Coil cartridge developed by Ortofon.

1957-59

During the transition from mono to stereo, Ortofon develops stereo cutterheads and soon afterwards, the first legendary SPU stereo cartridge.

1979

Ortofon receives the Danish Industrial Design Award for the Concorde DJ cartridges.

1980

Ortofon’s Instrument Department is established with the objective of developing and producing advanced measuring equipment for the audio industry.

1986

Scan Micro, Ortofon’s B2B facility, is established as a separate division.

2006

Production further extends to TPE/Thermoplastic Elastomers.

2008

Ortofon celebrates its 90th anniversary. For many years Ortofon has continuously developed new series of HiFi cartridges and cartridges for DJs as well as the disco scene - products all engineered to the highest standards, which reflects Ortofon’s unrelenting commitment to providing precise and accurate sound reproduction.

2009

Ortofon pioneers the use of SLM/Selective Laser Melting technology for production of phono cartridges.

Ortofon wins the HBH marketing award, which is the most prestigious marketing award in Denmark.
